German police conducted searches at Deutsche Bank’s offices in Frankfurt and Berlin on Wednesday morning as part of an ongoing investigation into money laundering. The news of the investigation, first reported by Spiegel, led to a decline in the bank’s shares, which were down roughly 2.7% at the time.
In response to the operation, Deutsche Bank confirmed that Frankfurt prosecutors are conducting an investigation at its business premises. A spokesperson for the bank stated, “We are cooperating fully with the prosecutor’s office. We cannot comment further on this matter.”
This investigation arrives just one day before Deutsche Bank is scheduled to release its fourth quarter and year-end earnings report, raising concerns about potential impacts on the bank’s financial standing and market perception.
This is not the first time Deutsche Bank has faced scrutiny from law enforcement. In 2022, officials searched the bank’s Frankfurt offices as part of a prior investigation into money laundering. Furthermore, in May of that year, both Deutsche Bank and its DWS subsidiary were investigated over allegations of greenwashing, highlighting the bank’s vulnerability to compliance issues.
In a notable previous incident in 2018, Deutsche Bank was the subject of scrutiny from 170 law enforcement officials investigating tax evasion concerning two employees. This investigation was linked to the infamous “Panama Papers” leak that exposed extensive financial misconduct. Although that inquiry was later dropped, the bank was left with a fine due to compliance shortcomings.
As Deutsche Bank navigates these recent challenges, the implications for its operations and future reputation are yet to be fully realized.
