The New York Jets are facing a critical moment as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, with their quarterback situation in a state of disarray. Head Coach Aaron Glenn has not yet confirmed the starting quarterback for Sunday, but the team may have no choice but to turn to undrafted rookie Brady Cook due to injuries to Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields.
Taylor, who suffered a groin injury during last Sunday’s game, is not expected to play, while Fields has been sidelined for the past week with knee soreness. This has left Cook, a former standout at Missouri, as the likely candidate to lead the team as they look to improve from their disappointing 3-10 record. The Jets have not started an undrafted rookie quarterback since J.J. Jones took the field on December 15, 1975, in a game against the New England Patriots.
Cook stepped in during last week’s 34-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins, entering the game with the team already down 21-0. His debut was marked by challenges typical of a quarterback in his position, including two interceptions and six sacks, along with two fumbles. Despite the rough outing, Cook showed resilience, completing 14 of 30 passes for 163 yards and receiving notable encouragement from offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand for his performance.
“I was really happy with how he performed,” Engstrand said. “We’ve got to clean up the turnovers and the fumbles, but there’s some very encouraging progress.” Cook’s ability to command the huddle has also earned him the respect of his teammates, who are willing to support him in this challenging situation.
The team’s current quarterback depth is reminiscent of their struggles in previous seasons, particularly in 2017, when they relied heavily on journeyman Josh McCown and backup Bryce Petty. The arrival of Fields on a two-year contract this past March generated optimism, but his inconsistency has contributed to the current narrative.
With both Taylor and Fields unable to contribute, the Jets re-signed Adrian Martinez to their practice squad, yet Cook remains the focal point as the team prepares for their upcoming matchup. Cook’s command over the offense has evolved, as he mentioned the importance of building trust with his teammates. “I think I’ve shown that to them, so they believe in me,” Cook stated, instilling a sense of confidence amidst the uncertainty.
As the Jets look ahead, they face not only the Jaguars but also a long offseason filled with potential changes. The upcoming draft and free agency period could offer new opportunities to revitalize a struggling roster, but for now, all eyes are on Cook as he gears up for a momentous start in the high-pressure world of the NFL.
