Comedian Kathy Griffin, 65, has opened up about the deeply personal sources of her comedy, revealing that her recent divorce from actor Randy Bick was even more challenging than her battle with lung cancer. Griffin, who has faced various struggles including addiction, suicidal thoughts, and health issues, expressed in a recent interview that her comedic material is often shaped by her lived experiences.
In her discussion with Interview Magazine, Griffin noted, “They’re being written as I’m going through it … and not by choice, by the way. It’s so hardwired for my mind to think like that.” She emphasized that the emotional turmoil from her divorce took a significant toll on her, stating, “When I was going through my divorce—which, like, I had cancer, and the divorce was harder. It just took me out.”
Reflecting on her journey, she added, “I was down for the count, and yet I was thinking, ‘Well, I’m also going through something everyone has gone through at some point in their lives: having their heart broken.’” Griffin pointed out that there are humorous aspects to her new single life that were absent during her marriage.
In a significant shift in focus, Griffin candidly talked about the backlash she experienced after a controversial image depicting her alongside Donald Trump, stating, “My whole life changed.” She shared her ongoing grief over the loss of her mother and described how those difficult experiences led her to create her latest special, My Life on the PTSD-List, which addresses topics including addiction, divorce, and mental health struggles.
Humor continues to be a coping mechanism for Griffin. In her conversation, she stated that the things that make her laugh currently revolve around “real stuff, real people.” She mentioned her willingness to engage in situations where material for comedy could emerge, such as trying out dating apps. However, she clarified that while she looked for comedic inspiration from these experiences, she would also prefer to find genuine connection.
Griffin’s interview follows her 65th birthday celebration, during which she reflected on her life and shared moments with fans on social media. Commenting on the occasion, she expressed her surprise at reaching this milestone, stating, “I can’t believe it. My problem is I still feel like I’m 25.”
In a notable chapter of her life, Griffin was diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer in 2021, despite being a lifelong non-smoker. She announced her diagnosis publicly and has since shown remarkable resilience, undergoing surgery to remove part of her lung and later sharing that she was cancer-free.
During recovery, Griffin faced physical challenges related to the surgery, including changes to her voice, which she described humorously as a “Minnie Mouse meets Marilyn Monroe” type sound. She expressed a desire to ensure her medical concerns were addressed adequately, emphasizing the importance of patient advocacy and mental health support during such upheavals.
Griffin’s journey through cancer treatment remains a mix of personal growth and comedy, providing her with rich material and insights into coping with life’s unpredictability. As she navigates her post-cancer life and recent personal changes, she continues to find strength in humor and connection, using her experiences to carve out a narrative that resonates with many.
