The landscape of Medicare Advantage plans in the Rochester-Finger Lakes region is undergoing significant changes, with several plans scheduled for termination by 2026. Beneficiaries must select a new plan by the fast-approaching deadline of December 7 to avoid lapsing into traditional Medicare coverage.
David Kirst, the insurance sales and operations manager for AAA Western and Central New York, emphasizes the urgency of the situation. If recipients fail to make a timely choice, they will retain Medicare Part A and B, but their Medicare Advantage plan will cease to exist. This shift back to classic Medicare may lead to surprising costs. “I think people will get sticker shock of what prescriptions actually cost,” Kirst warned. Without a Medicare Advantage plan, individuals may find themselves responsible for paying the full price of their medications instead of a co-pay.
The primary reason behind these plan terminations is a divergence between insurance companies’ expectations and the reality of healthcare utilization. Kirst explained that Medicare plans are being used more frequently than anticipated, which has led to financial strains on insurance carriers. As a result, many beneficiaries could face increasing out-of-pocket costs, particularly for high-priced medications like GLP-1 weight-loss drugs.
Additionally, the specific Medicare Advantage plans affected vary by locality. The options available in Buffalo and Rochester differ markedly from those in Syracuse, complicating the decision-making process for beneficiaries. “Your health may be different going into next year,” Kirst noted, encouraging individuals to reflect on any upcoming medical needs, including surgeries, when evaluating new plans.
While there is technically an extended deadline until February 28 for plan selection, Kirst highlights a crucial consideration: coverage will change starting January 1 for those who don’t act by December 7. To navigate this complex landscape, seeking guidance from experts is essential. “If your plan’s getting terminated, make sure that you’re reaching out to a professional,” Kirst advised, underscoring the intricacies involved in understanding Medicare options.
Beneficiaries are urged to take proactive steps in reviewing their healthcare needs and upcoming changes, with local AAA specialists available to assist them in making informed decisions about their Medicare coverage.
