Shares of Meta Platforms, the social media giant, experienced a notable decline, falling 8.1% in afternoon trading after the company issued a forecast indicating a substantial increase in spending. This decrease overshadowed the company’s impressive first-quarter performance, which featured a year-on-year revenue surge of 33.1% and an earnings-per-share figure that exceeded analysts’ estimates by over 56%. However, investors expressed concerns regarding Meta’s rising costs, particularly in light of the company’s announcement to raise its full-year capital expenditure guidance to $135 billion, an increase from the prior forecast of $125 billion. This substantial investment raised red flags about the company’s future profitability, contributing to the stock’s decline.

The share price closed at $611.83, marking a 9.2% drop from its previous close. The sharp decline brought attention to the stock’s market behavior; Meta has not shown significant volatility recently, reporting only nine moves greater than 5% over the past year. This latest shift suggests that the market views the news as significant, although it may not necessarily alter the long-term perception of the business.

In a recent development prior to this downturn, Meta’s stock gained 2.7% after the company announced a multibillion-dollar partnership with Amazon aimed at enhancing its “agentic AI” capabilities. The multi-year agreement allows Meta to utilize tens of millions of AWS Graviton CPU cores, facilitating the real-time reasoning and code-generation tasks essential for its next-generation AI agents. This partnership positions Meta as one of Amazon’s largest silicon customers and signals a strategic shift toward a more energy-efficient operational framework. Such moves address investor apprehensions that heavy investments in AI could jeopardize the company’s operational margins.

The partnership complements Meta’s “Efficiency 2.0” initiative, which has recently included workforce reductions aimed at prioritizing high-growth AI projects. Analysts suggest that securing necessary computational resources will support a projected 30% growth in ad revenue ahead of the earnings report scheduled for April 29. By balancing aggressive cost-cutting measures with impactful infrastructure agreements, Meta is working to reshape market perceptions around its capacity for disciplined scaling amidst rising investment.

Year-to-date, Meta shares have depreciated by 5.6%, and at the current price of $613.83, the stock is trading 22.3% below its 52-week high of $790 recorded in August 2025. Despite this decline, investors who purchased $1,000 worth of Meta’s shares five years ago would now see their investment valued at approximately $1,888, reflecting the company’s long-term growth potential.

As the market reacts to these developments, questions arise around the timing for potential investments in Meta. The large price drop may offer entry points for new investors, particularly as the company navigates its spending strategy and technological advancements in AI. Comprehensive analyses of these factors may provide insights for those considering the stock.
