Middlesex County, NJ — The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office has issued a critical alert regarding a rising trend of phishing scams targeting users of Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency exchange known for facilitating the buying, selling, and storage of digital assets. This warning comes in light of a nationwide surge in sophisticated scams aimed at cell phone users through text message communications.

Cybercriminals are employing deceptive text messages that impersonate Coinbase, aiming to steal user credentials and gain unauthorized access to accounts. The phony messages typically claim that suspicious activity has been detected on the user’s account or prompts immediate verification to avoid alleged account issues.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and aware of several important red flags associated with these scams. These include:

– Messages coming from unknown sender numbers that are not linked to official Coinbase communications.
– Unsolicited one-time password (OTP) codes or notifications about fake account withdrawals.
– Requests urging users to call a specific phone number to “verify” account activity.
– Messages that contain poor grammar, spelling errors, or use excessively urgent language designed to evoke panic among recipients.

To protect themselves from potential breaches, the Prosecutor’s Office advises individuals to take immediate action if they encounter any phishing attempts. This includes changing passwords without delay if there has been any interaction with a suspicious message, contacting financial institutions if sensitive information may have been shared, and blocking the sender’s number while reporting the text as spam or junk.

In case individuals believe they are being victimized, they are encouraged to call 9-1-1 or their local police department. Reports of scams can also be made directly to Coinbase at security@coinbase.com or to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) through their website at https://www.ic3.gov.

Residents are urged to remain informed and proactive in safeguarding their digital assets in light of this alarming trend.
