MoonPay has officially launched a dedicated app within ChatGPT’s App Store, marking a significant milestone as the first and only cryptocurrency onramp integrated with OpenAI’s chatbot. This innovative development went live on May 22, enabling users to purchase various cryptocurrencies directly through ChatGPT.
With the new app, users can inquire about specific crypto assets and request a purchase amount. Following this, ChatGPT generates a checkout link that directs users to MoonPay’s platform to complete the KYC (Know Your Customer) process and finalize their payment. The app supports a diverse range of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, XRP, Ethereum, Solana, USDC, and over 100 additional digital assets from more than 30 different blockchain networks. Payment options are versatile, accommodating credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and bank transfers, making it accessible to a wide array of users across 160-plus countries.
The integration is particularly user-friendly. After searching for MoonPay in ChatGPT’s Apps section and connecting their accounts, users can ask the chatbot about the cryptocurrency they wish to purchase, accompanied by a specified amount. ChatGPT will then automatically fill in the details of the transaction and provide a checkout link. Returning customers also have the convenience of using saved payment methods without the need to re-establish an account.
Kevin Arifin, a Blockchain Engineer and Product Lead at MoonPay, highlighted the app’s role in facilitating financial education. He stated, “It’s like a broker that sits by you, not making financial recommendations, but educating you about the asset you’re buying.” The design of the app aims to cater to mainstream consumers seeking to understand the workings of cryptocurrency through conversational interaction, rather than engaging in autonomous AI trading.
Additionally, this move aligns with MoonPay’s broader strategy in the AI landscape. The company has recently acquired Dawn Labs and launched the Dawn CLI, which is focused on AI-driven prediction market strategies. MoonPay Trade, an institutional platform, offers banks and fintech firms streamlined access to tokenized assets, DeFi, and stablecoin liquidity.
With its integration into ChatGPT, MoonPay stands out among fellow crypto-related apps like Kraken, OKX, CryptoAudit, and RealOpen. Unlike these competitors, MoonPay’s app allows users to make direct purchases, rather than merely querying blockchain data. For users engaging with Bitcoin and XRP through the ChatGPT interface, there are dedicated price pages that track live market movements, further enhancing the user experience.
This strategic move positions MoonPay at the forefront of the evolving intersection between cryptocurrency and AI, potentially reshaping how users engage with digital assets in the future.
