A North Carolina resident has celebrated a significant windfall after narrowly missing out on a $1.2 billion Powerball jackpot. Daryl Steinhoff emerged as the winner of a substantial $2 million prize from the drawing held on September 1, where he fell just one number short of the grand prize.
Steinhoff, who used a combination of “family numbers,” managed to match all five white balls and activated the Power Play option for an additional dollar, effectively doubling his prize from $1 million to $2 million. The winning numbers for that drawing were 8, 23, 25, 40, 53, with the red Powerball being 5.
The 68-year-old from Clayton, North Carolina, was blissfully unaware of his fortune until the following morning when he received an email notification confirming his win. “I was ecstatic and in disbelief. I called my daughter and girlfriend,” Steinhoff recounted, expressing his joy at the unexpected news.
Steinhoff officially claimed his prize at the North Carolina State Lottery headquarters in Raleigh, where he posed with a giant check for $2 million. After taxes, he will take home approximately $1.44 million. His plans for the money include purchasing a new home, marking a new chapter in his life thanks to his lucky numbers.
He is not alone in his remarkable luck; an anonymous player in Montana also won $2 million during the same drawing by matching all five white balls and using the power play feature. This ticket was purchased at a Rosauers Supermarket in Missoula and was claimed shortly thereafter. Montana Lottery officials shared a reminder for players, stating, “Lesson of the day: Listen to your gut, even if you’re told that it’s a waste of time!”
The recent surge in Powerball jackpots has kept players engaged, culminating in a record 42 consecutive drawings without a jackpot win. This streak was finally broken when players from Missouri and Texas claimed a staggering $1.79 billion jackpot on the following Saturday, October 6.
For the recent winning players, including Steinhoff, the path to wealth varied, with some choosing to take their payouts as a one-time lump sum, while others might opt for an annuitized prize distributed over several years. Alongside Steinhoff, players from Kansas and Texas also matched all five white balls, claiming their own $2 million prizes, while a number of others walked away with $1 million each after similar wins during the drawing.
The excitement surrounding Powerball continues to inspire hopeful players across the country, with stories of big wins reinforcing the age-old adage of the lottery being a game of chance where everyone dreams of hitting it big.
