The term “smart money,” often associated with recognized investment managers on Wall Street, is not exclusive to professional money managers. It encompasses any organization with the proficiency to select stocks based on substantial knowledge or expertise in a specific field. A prominent example is Nvidia, a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) that produces the computing processors integral to many AI systems, and collaborates with various technology companies to enhance these platforms.

Recently, Nvidia, through its venture capital arm NVentures, acquired 833,325 shares in Generate Biomedicines, a lesser-known biotechnology firm that commands a market cap of approximately $2 billion. While Nvidia’s $13 million investment constitutes a modest amount relative to its $80 billion reserves, the move underscores Nvidia’s recognition of Generate Biomedicines’ potential.

Generate Biomedicines is not a typical biotechnology company; it specializes in developing an AI platform that simulates the performance of prospective drug molecules in treating specific diseases. This platform is operational and has progressed to real clinical trials with four drug candidates in its pipeline, including one, GB-0895, which is currently undergoing phase 3 testing for severe asthma.

This innovative technology addresses major challenges in the pharmaceutical industry, including the waste of time and financial resources typically associated with drug development. Traditionally, only about 10% of drugs moving into clinical trials receive approval, a figure that can be even lower when considering the preclinical development stage.

The drug development process can span 10 to 15 years and cost around $2.6 billion to bring a new medicine to market. Many potential drugs never enter development due to concerns about resource allocation, further compounding the issue of valuable treatments that never see the light of day.

The AI-driven approach of Generate Biomedicines aims to alleviate these challenges by providing drug developers with a clearer virtual understanding of how a drug might interact in clinical conditions. Research indicates that AI-discovered drugs show nearly double the likelihood of success in phase 1 trials compared to traditional methods. This advancement could reshape the pharmaceutical landscape, which is valued at $1.8 trillion, offering a more efficient means to refresh drug portfolios.

Generate Biomedicines is not the only player in this burgeoning sector; it faces competition from firms like Recursion Pharmaceuticals, Insilico Medicine, and Isomorphic Labs, among others. With the AI drug development market projected to reach $160 billion annually by 2035, even capturing a small segment of this growth could be significant for Generate Biomedicines.

Nvidia’s strategic choice to partner with Generate Biomedicines, despite its collaborations with other competitors in the field, speaks volumes about its confidence in the company’s innovative approach. This development could signal a lucrative opportunity for investors willing to embrace the accompanying risks and potential volatility.
