Nvidia, a dominant player in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, has recently garnered significant attention from investors following strategic partnerships with optics technology companies Lumentum Holdings and Coherent. The chipmaker has committed to investing $2 billion in each firm, reinforcing their pivotal roles in the evolving AI landscape.

This partnership announcement coincided with news that both Lumentum and Coherent are set to join the S&P 500, one of the most respected benchmarks of U.S. stock market performance, alongside Vertiv Holdings and EchoStar. The inclusion in this elite index, which comprises 500 prominent publicly traded companies, epitomizes a significant achievement for the firms.

To qualify for membership in the S&P 500, companies must meet specific criteria, including being U.S.-based, possessing a market capitalization of at least $22.7 billion, demonstrating high liquidity, and being profitable both in the recent quarter and over the past four quarters as per Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Lumentum and Coherent’s successful entry into this index—a notable validation of their industry standing—will take effect before the market opens on March 23.

Admission to the S&P 500 not only enhances a company’s credibility but also typically results in increased buying activity from index-tracking funds, which can elevate stock prices in the short term.

In conjunction with their partnership with Nvidia, which features a multiyear strategic agreement backed by a substantial purchase commitment, both companies are positioned favorably for growth. Nvidia emphasized the importance of optical interconnect technology, stating that efficient packaging and integration are essential for scaling AI operations, thereby enhancing energy efficiency and robustness within large AI systems.

Both Lumentum and Coherent specialize in supplying advanced optical and photonic networking components vital for data centers. These technologies utilize lasers and dedicated processors to facilitate data transmission through optical cables, achieving high bandwidth with minimal latency and improved energy efficiency. This underscores Nvidia’s commitment to securing essential infrastructure for its data center needs.

The market has reacted positively to these developments. Over the past year, Lumentum’s stock has soared by 932%, while Coherent has surged by 279%. As a result, their valuations have increased significantly, trading at 34 and 45 times their expected earnings for the next year, respectively.

The concerted investments from Nvidia, paired with their recent admissions to the S&P 500, signal a promising outlook for both Coherent and Lumentum. Investors are likely to keep a close watch on these companies as they navigate the dynamic landscape of optical technology and AI integration.
