As OpenAI approaches the conclusion of a high-profile trial related to a multibillion-dollar lawsuit initiated by Elon Musk, one of its co-founders, the company is contemplating a new legal challenge against tech giant Apple. Sources familiar with OpenAI’s internal deliberations, speaking on the condition of anonymity, have revealed that the artificial intelligence firm is considering litigation regarding Apple’s use of its popular ChatGPT chatbot integrated into Apple devices.

The relationship between the two companies began two years ago, when they entered a partnership as part of Apple’s strategy to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities, particularly with its virtual assistant, Siri. Under this agreement, ChatGPT was expected to bolster Siri’s functionality, enabling it to address more complex user inquiries.

However, reports suggest that OpenAI is now contemplating sending a notice of breach of contract to Apple. This follows a period during which Apple faced challenges with its AI upgrades, resulting in delays for an improved version of Siri. Despite the booming investments in AI from various tech behemoths, Apple has largely remained inactive in the space, while competitors have aggressively developed their offerings.

OpenAI has expressed disappointment regarding the integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s ecosystem. The company hoped that the collaboration would enhance ChatGPT’s visibility and encourage more subscriptions to the service. However, feedback indicates that many users find the option to access ChatGPT through Siri less intuitive and difficult to locate.

In light of these grievances, OpenAI’s consideration of legal action may serve as a strategic maneuver in negotiations, especially given that Apple has also begun to explore partnerships with some of OpenAI’s rivals. Earlier this year, Apple announced plans to leverage Google’s Gemini AI models and cloud services for its AI projects, including Siri.

Apple has opted not to comment on the unfolding situation, but the implications of these developments continue to reverberate within the technology landscape, raising questions about the future of AI integrations and partnerships.
