Repsol has officially joined the Hedera Council, aiming to spearhead the adoption of Web3 technologies in the energy sector. This partnership centers on the implementation of Decentralized Digital Identity (DID), which is poised to enhance trust, security, and efficiency in business interactions. As a Fortune Global 500 company, Repsol operates in more than 90 countries and serves over 24 million customers worldwide, underscoring its significant influence in the global energy landscape.
The collaboration focuses on reimagining data verification and exchange across Repsol’s extensive operations. Leveraging Hedera’s enterprise-grade distributed ledger technology, the initiative aims to facilitate secure, auditable, and real-time information management. This technological approach is particularly relevant in light of upcoming regulations such as the European Union Digital Identity Wallets, eIDAS2, and GDPR. By integrating these advancements, Repsol seeks to reduce administrative burdens and enhance transparency in critical processes including procurement, supplier onboarding, and sustainability reporting.
Repsol has articulated three main objectives for its engagement with the Hedera Council:
-
Standardization: The establishment of interoperable identity frameworks to benefit suppliers, partners, and employees.
-
Automation: Streamlining operations through wallet-to-wallet credential exchange to enhance Know Your Business (KYB) and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes.
-
Integrity: Delivering verifiable and tamper-proof credentials that aim to eradicate fraud and build stronger trust across all business dealings.
In addition to its Council membership, Repsol plans to operate a node on the Hedera network, providing it with equal voting power alongside other members in governing Hedera’s software and services. The company will also investigate new applications for DID, including sustainable origin certificate issuance and vendor data verification, while working collaboratively with the Hedera ecosystem and fellow Council members to drive industry-wide acceptance of Web3 solutions.
Tom Sylvester, President of Hedera Council, noted that Repsol’s decision to join signals a pivotal moment for the Hedera ecosystem. He emphasized that the company operates across diverse markets and supply chains that necessitate verifiable trust at scale. This strategic move illustrates the pressing need for trusted governance in the future of multinational operations and intricate supply chain verification.
The Hedera Council itself is a globally distributed governing body that includes leading organizations committed to ensuring decentralized, secure, and transparent oversight of the Hedera network. With Repsol’s inclusion, the Council now comprises a diverse group of up to 39 globally recognized entities, solidifying its authority and reach in the field of decentralized governance.
