Rocket Lab has secured a significant contract worth $816 million with the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA), marking its largest award to date as the company seeks to broaden its scope beyond its identity as a traditional rocket manufacturer.
The award, announced last Friday, designates Rocket Lab USA as the prime contractor responsible for the design and production of 18 advanced satellites. These satellites will be outfitted with cutting-edge missile warning, tracking, and defense sensors, forming a crucial component of the SDA’s Tracking Layer Tranche 3 program.
This latest contract is distinct from a previous $515 million agreement in which Rocket Lab is also engaged to supply satellites for the SDA’s Transport Layer-Beta Tranche 2 program. That initiative focuses on establishing a satellite communications network in low Earth orbit to deliver encrypted, low-latency data for military applications.
With these two contracts combined, Rocket Lab’s total engagement with the SDA now exceeds $1.3 billion, underscoring the company’s strategic pivot into the defense sector.
Rocket Lab’s expansion into this arena reflects a broader ambition, as the company has indicated plans to compete for substantial Department of Defense contracts, including the multibillion-dollar Golden Dome initiative. This diversification effort highlights Rocket Lab’s commitment to enhancing its capabilities and solidifying its position within the defense industry.
