CHICAGO – The city is bracing for a mix of wintry weather as forecasts predict everything from rain to freezing rain, sleet, and snow over the next couple of days. According to Fox 32 Chief Meteorologist Emily Wahls, the conditions are expected to create hazardous travel situations for residents.
As temperatures rise above freezing later today, most of the precipitation is anticipated to fall as rain. However, concerns remain for areas in the north-northwest suburbs, where freezing rain and a glaze of ice may develop due to slower warming ground temperatures. Drivers in these regions, especially near and north of I-88, are advised to exercise caution as untreated surfaces could become icy as evening approaches.
By Wednesday morning, the rain is expected to transition into snow just around daybreak. Although snow totals are projected to be modest, at approximately half an inch, northwest winds gusting up to 40 mph could lead to challenging conditions for morning commuters, including poor visibility and slick roads.
Throughout Wednesday, scattered snow showers are likely to persist as temperatures begin to fall, dropping from the 30s in the morning into the 20s by the afternoon. An arctic air mass is forecasted to take hold of the region, ushering in colder temperatures.
Looking ahead to Thursday, the day is anticipated to be primarily dry yet frigid, with highs only reaching the low to mid-20s. However, a new chance for snow is on the horizon, arriving Thursday night into Friday. While this upcoming system is not expected to be significant, it could still lead to slippery travel conditions on Thursday night and Friday morning.
As the weekend approaches, temperatures are projected to plummet. Friday night will see temperatures dip into the single digits, with Saturday only expected to reach 10 to 15 degrees. A quick-moving system may bring additional snow on Saturday, but it should clear by Sunday. For those planning to attend the Bears game on Sunday, expect temperatures around 10 degrees, with many areas experiencing sub-zero temperatures Saturday night.
Residents are urged to stay informed about changing weather conditions and to take necessary precautions while traveling during this wintry spell.
