Starbucks has officially launched a beta application integrated within ChatGPT, aimed at enhancing the customer experience by providing personalized drink recommendations. Customers can now access this feature by enabling the Starbucks app within ChatGPT’s app directory and initiating a conversation with the chatbot using the prompt “@Starbucks.” While users can customize their drink orders and choose specific locations for pick-up, it is important to note that finalizing orders must still be done through the official Starbucks app or website. This setup underscores the brand’s focus on its loyalty program, which plays a significant role in customer retention.
Paul Riedel, Starbucks’ senior vice president of digital and loyalty, emphasized that the company has recognized a shift in how customers approach their orders. “Over the past year, one thing has become clear: customers aren’t always starting with a menu,” he stated. He continued, “They’re starting with a feeling… We wanted to meet customers right in that moment of inspiration and make it easier than ever to find a drink that fits.”
This latest launch is part of Starbucks’ broader “Back to Starbucks” strategy, which seeks to rejuvenate in-store traffic and recapture customer interest. The company has taken several steps, including reinstating seating in cafes, streamlining its menu, and reintroducing tiers to its loyalty program. Additionally, the mobile app offers features for drink discovery, such as a trending beverage category and a “secret menu” section.
The importance of drink discovery is particularly apparent when it comes to attracting Gen Z consumers, who have shown a clear preference for distinctive drink offerings compared to older generations. Starbucks’ renewed approach appears to be yielding positive results, as the company recently reported an increase in customer transactions after two years of decline.
This move into generative artificial intelligence isn’t Starbucks’ first; last year, the company launched Green Dot Assist, an AI-driven tool designed to support baristas, utilizing Microsoft Azure’s OpenAI platform. The trend of integrating AI into customer service is gaining traction across various industries, with other major brands like Walmart, Etsy, and Booking.com also experimenting with ChatGPT to enhance their shopping experiences.
