The recent launch of the Royal Pop pocket watches, a collaborative effort between Swatch and luxury timepiece maker Audemars Piguet, resulted in substantial chaos across multiple cities. On Saturday, Swatch closed over three dozen of its stores as eager customers formed long lines in hopes of purchasing the coveted watches, which were priced between $400 and $420.

The situation escalated quickly, leading to police intervention in locations from London to New York. Social media footage captured scenes of distress at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, where officers reportedly resorted to using pepper spray to control the overwhelming crowds. The New York Police Department noted that several shoppers congregated at Swatch locations in Times Square and SoHo, resulting in at least one arrest due to the tumultuous behavior of the throngs vying for the new releases.

In response to the disturbances and public safety concerns, Swatch announced via its social media platforms that it had temporarily closed more than 30 stores globally. This event marked the intended global launch of the Bioceramic Royal Pop Collection, a vibrant line of pocket watches paying homage to Audemars Piguet’s distinguished Royal Oak model and Swatch’s own affordable POP line from the 1980s.

Before the launch, Swatch had instructed customers on its website that the watches would be sold exclusively at selected stores, advising against forming large crowds. The company reiterated that the collection was not limited edition. Nevertheless, large gatherings formed in various regions, including Singapore and a suburb of Detroit, where dedicated fans arrived as early as 4 a.m. in anticipation.

As the excitement grew, numerous stores in major cities such as Paris, London, Dubai, and Toronto were eventually shut down to manage the overwhelming number of shoppers. The situation prompted a wave of frustration among customers who took to social media to express their disappointment about not being able to secure a watch after hours or even days of queuing. Many expressed that they would have preferred an online purchasing option, given the circumstances.

In Pennsylvania, the King of Prussia Mall had to delay its opening until noon after authorities dispersed a large crowd hoping to purchase the timepieces. The frenzy is also partially fueled by the flourishing resale market; those who successfully bought the pocket watches quickly listed them on platforms like eBay for significantly higher prices, further driving consumer interest.

The collaboration offered watch enthusiasts a rare chance to own an Audemars Piguet product at a more accessible price point, amplifying the rush. As events unfolded, both Swatch and its customers faced unexpected challenges amid the fervor for these unique timepieces.
