The much-anticipated docuseries, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour | The End of an Era, debuted on Disney+ on December 12, providing an in-depth look at the iconic pop star’s record-breaking tour. Swift, known for her chart-topping hits and elaborate performances, shares candid insights into her creative journey for the tour, which spanned from March 2023 to December 2024.
One of the standout moments in the series is Swift’s revelation about how her friend, actress Emma Stone, played a pivotal role in the creation of the tour’s choreography. As Swift began to plan for what would become an unprecedented event in music history, she reached out to Stone for recommendations, knowing of her extensive experience in dance through various film projects. Stone highly recommended choreographer Mandy Moore, emphasizing her unique talent and expertise.
Moore, who is renowned for her work in film and television, was initially surprised to find herself in this prominent position. “I never would have thought that I would be in the same sentence as Taylor Swift, ever, in my life,” she shares in the docuseries. Despite her limited experience in choreographing music tours, Moore quickly connected with Swift, who aimed to differentiate her performance from traditional concert formats by infusing storytelling elements—an approach Moore found resonated deeply with her style.
Throughout the docuseries, viewers are treated to behind-the-scenes glimpses of the choreographic process and rehearsal sessions. Notably, Swift’s unconventional method of learning dance moves is highlighted; she absorbs choreography not through standard eight-count frameworks, but by focusing on the lyrical syllables of her songs. This innovative technique contributed to the distinctiveness of the tour’s artistic vision.
Mandy Moore’s impressive credentials include notable projects such as Glee, Silver Linings Playbook, and competitive dance shows like So You Think You Can Dance. Her collaboration with Swift extended beyond the live performances; she also choreographed for the music video of Swift’s latest hit, “The Fate of Ophelia,” from her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl.
In a previous interview with the New York Times, Moore elaborated on Swift’s initial struggles with her dancing. “She’d gotten a bad rap for a long time about her dancing, so she was really in her head,” Moore mentioned. To address these concerns, they shifted the focus to enhancing Swift’s natural movements, making adjustments to polish her performance while maintaining authenticity.
The first two episodes of the six-part docuseries are now available for streaming, showcasing the amalgamation of artistry, friendship, and creative risk-taking that defined the Eras Tour. Additionally, Swift released The Eras Tour: The Final Show, a concert film documenting the tour’s climactic performance in Vancouver, coinciding with the docuseries launch on December 12.
