In a significant disruption affecting air travel in the Dallas area, hundreds of flights faced delays and cancellations on Friday due to telecommunications equipment issues. Federal officials reported that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented flight slowdowns at both Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (D/FW) and Dallas Love Field due to a “reported local telephone company equipment issue.” Importantly, this disruption did not stem from any equipment used by the FAA, according to their statements.
As the situation unfolded, it became clear that the delays were extensive. FlightAware data revealed nearly 700 flights departing from or arriving at D/FW Airport were delayed, while approximately 200 flights had to be canceled. At Love Field, around 160 flights experienced delays, and one flight faced cancellation.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Love Field emphasized the airport’s commitment to managing the ongoing situation. They noted their “constant communication” with various partners, including the FAA, in efforts to minimize disruptions for travelers.
Further updates indicated that departures from Love Field averaged delays of about 30 minutes. At DFW Airport, a ground stop was imposed for American Airlines, with other airlines reporting delays extending over an hour. The FAA advised that they expected the delays to persist well into the evening as they continued to address the telecommunications issues impacting flight operations in the area.
