Verizon announced on Thursday that it will provide $20 credits to customers impacted by a significant cellular service outage that occurred the previous day. The disruption, which lasted nearly ten hours, began around noon and extended well past 10 p.m. ET, affecting numerous users of the nation’s largest wireless provider.
In a statement shared via the social media platform X, Verizon acknowledged the outage and its failure to meet customer expectations. “Yesterday, we did not meet the standard of excellence you expect and that we expect of ourselves,” the company stated, emphasizing their commitment to customer service. To address the inconvenience, customers can redeem the credit by logging into the myVerizon app.
Verizon also advised customers who may still experience connectivity issues to restart their devices, suggesting that rebooting would be the quickest method to restore service. “This credit isn’t meant to make up for what happened,” the company clarified, “No credit really can. But it’s a way of acknowledging your time and showing that this matters to us.”
The outage drew the attention of public officials, with New York state Assembly member Anil Beephan Jr. calling for an investigation by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Beephan highlighted the outage’s impact on public safety, particularly regarding access to emergency services and critical response communications. He raised concerns about the overall reliability of major communication infrastructures.
While the FCC indicated that it was monitoring the situation, it did not address specific inquiries about the cause of the outage. FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez stated that she would request a thorough investigation from the Consumer/Public Safety Bureaus to understand the source of the service disruption.
As customers continue to seek answers, Verizon has not provided specific details about the factors leading to the outage. The incident raises broader questions about the stability and resilience of essential wireless services in the face of unforeseen disruptions.
