Vitol Begins Naphtha Shipments to Venezuela Amid Oil Export Challenges

Commodities trading house Vitol has initiated shipments of naphtha to Venezuela, a significant step for the country’s oil export operations. This move comes as the Dutch commodities giant has chartered a tanker to transport approximately 460,000 barrels of naphtha from the US Gulf Coast to Venezuela, according to data from energy intelligence firm Kpler.

Naphtha serves as an essential oil diluent, particularly crucial for Venezuela, where the predominant crude oil type, Merey 16, is an extra-heavy grade. This type of oil is notably viscous and dense, making it nearly impossible to transport through pipelines without the aid of a diluent like naphtha. The situation underscores the challenges faced by Venezuela’s oil industry, which, despite having what is considered the world’s largest proved oil reserves, struggles with the transportation and refining of its primary heavy-grade oil, thus impacting profit margins for producers.

Since the US’s extraction of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, the Trump administration has exerted pressure on American oil companies to invest billions in capital expenditures to potentially re-enter and rebuild the Venezuelan oil sector. In this geopolitical context, international trading houses such as Vitol and Singapore-based Trafigura have emerged as the first beneficiaries of the new policies, having established deals with the administration that enable them to swiftly facilitate the movement of oil products into and out of Venezuela.

Vitol’s recent chartering of a crude oil tanker for naphtha shipment is viewed as a pioneering action under the Trump administration’s renewed management of Venezuela’s oil industry. The potential benefits extend to US oil companies, as the production of naphtha as a byproduct of oil drilling presents an opportunity for them to re-enter the Venezuelan market.

Prior to the US enforcement of a blockade on sanctioned oil vessels entering and exiting Venezuela last December, Russia held the position as the leading supplier of naphtha to the South American nation. With Vitol’s recent shipments, a shift in the dynamic of oil product supply to Venezuela may be underway, reshaping the landscape of the country’s challenging oil industry.
