A significant outage has disrupted service across Meta’s platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, affecting thousands of users on Friday. Reports of the outage surged on social media and were tracked by the outage-monitoring site Downdetector.
The data from Downdetector highlighted a rapid increase in complaints related to Instagram, with reports jumping from a baseline of approximately 25 to several thousand as users expressed difficulties accessing the app. Many reported being unexpectedly logged out, unable to load the application, or struggling to access their accounts altogether.
Meta’s communications vice president, Andy Stone, acknowledged the issue on X, stating, “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.” Despite this reassurance, frustrated users flocked to Downdetector’s comment section, sharing their experiences. One user described encountering a “Blank page,” while another lamented being “logged out of my account out of nowhere” and facing issues when trying to log back in.
The problems were not isolated to Instagram, as numerous users reported being logged out of Facebook and Messenger, often met with error messages upon attempting to log back in. One user noted, “Anybody else just been logged out of Facebook messenger and can’t log back in? Unknown error,” a sentiment echoing through many similar complaints.
Additionally, users began to speculate on the extent of the outage, with some wondering if it was a global issue. A post claimed that “Facebook is down globally,” reflecting the confusion and concern among users.
Efforts for more information from Meta have been made, yet the scope and duration of the outage remain unclear as users continue to experience disruptions across the platforms.
