The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced plans to establish a “Government Blockchain Academy,” aimed at educating the public sector about cryptocurrency and other emerging technologies. The initiative, which will begin next year, is a collaboration with the Exponential Science Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting blockchain and artificial intelligence.
The UNDP has expressed that the academy will focus on tailored education and implementation programs that leverage blockchain, artificial intelligence, and other innovative technologies to help governments facilitate significant transformations. The agency’s primary mission is to assist countries in fostering long-term economic growth to combat poverty, a goal that aligns with the increasing adoption of crypto solutions in developing regions. Notably, countries like India, Pakistan, and Vietnam have emerged as leaders in cryptocurrency adoption, according to a report by Chainalysis.
The curriculum will address pressing developmental challenges and will aim to equip nations with the tools necessary to tackle complex issues. Irena Cerovic, a team leader with the UNDP for Europe and Central Asia, has emphasized that the academy will empower governments to progress from initial trials to effective implementations. This evolution is intended to enhance transparency, inclusion, and resilience in governance.
Among the academy’s focus areas will be the development of “trusted, verifiable digital credentials” that can improve access to public services. The instruction will also cover how blockchain technology could enhance financial services and digital payments, facilitate traceability in public procurement processes, and establish tamper-resistant recordkeeping to mitigate corruption. Furthermore, it will explore utilizing tokens and smart contracts for climate finance, which includes tracking carbon credits effectively.
While the UNDP has not provided specific launch timelines, it indicated that some countries will begin participating in the academy by 2026, with the design of the curriculum set to commence this year. The program will include a mix of in-person, online, and forum-based education, aimed at delivering structured support to governments. This structured approach is anticipated to lead to high-impact blockchain initiatives that align with national priorities.
The forthcoming academy expands upon the UNDP’s existing endeavors, following last year’s introduction of a similar program designed to educate its staff on blockchain technology in partnership with the Algorand Foundation. This initiative trained 22,000 personnel to leverage blockchain knowledge in promoting sustainable growth strategies across various countries.
