Grand Seiko has introduced a luxurious trio of gold Spring Drive models, each powered by the innovative new 9RA2 movement and designed exclusively for the Japanese market. The series includes the SLGA030 in rose gold, the SLGA027 in white gold, and the SLGA028 in yellow gold. This release marks a significant refinement in the brand’s offerings, boasting a slimmer profile, enhanced power reserve, and new dial designs, all complemented by a substantial 18k gold bracelet that nearly weighs 200 grams.
Historically, Grand Seiko’s full gold watches featuring 45KS-style cases have been a staple in the Japanese market. These timepieces were powered by the cal. 9R15, known for its superior automatic Spring Drive capabilities. Now, with the introduction of the cal. 9RA2, Grand Seiko aims to refresh this prestigious line while retaining the luxurious appeal of its predecessors.
The previous models, including the SBGA364, SBGA361, and SBGA362, served the brand well, but the introduction of the 9RA2 movement marks a new era. Not only does the new movement allow for a marginally slimmer case measuring 12.1 mm in height, but it also offers a significant increase in power reserve, extending from three days to an impressive five. Additionally, the power reserve indicator has been relocated to the case back, allowing for cleaner dial designs.
The dials of the new models maintain a classic sunburst aesthetic that resonates with the Grand Seiko line, though they have been updated with contemporary touches. The yellow gold model’s dial remains largely unchanged, aside from the repositioned power reserve indicator. The white gold timepiece now features a stunning ice blue gradient sunray dial with a heat-greyed seconds hand, while the rose gold variant showcases a warm brown gradient dial. There’s also an off-catalog SLGA032 in rose gold with a striking stormy grey dial that was quietly launched earlier this year, enhancing the collection’s appeal with a subtle yet sophisticated touch.
Pricing for these luxurious pieces is considerable, with the yellow gold SLGA028 and rose gold SLGA030 retailing for approximately $54,000 each, while the white gold SLGA027 is priced around $60,000. This positions them significantly above similar models from other luxury watch brands, including a 40 mm Rolex Day-Date in the same gold material.
The solid gold bracelets are particularly noteworthy, as they exemplify the brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Previous generations of Grand Seiko bracelets were sourced from a supplier in northern Italy known for its service to other luxury watchmakers. The new bracelets feature subtly rounded links and a refined butterfly clasp, diverging from the traditional fold-over design.
The 40 mm cases are consistent with Grand Seiko’s modern “44GS” design language, rooted in the 45KS style, and are polished using a highly detailed tin-plate method. Each model maintains a water resistance of up to 100 meters, an impressive feature for luxury timepieces, although they do not include a screw-down crown.
As these exquisite pieces prepare for a display at Grand Seiko boutiques and select retailers in Japan starting October 2025, they stand as a testament to the brand’s evolving heritage and dedication to luxury and precision.
