A United Airlines flight encountered a significant incident shortly after takeoff from Dulles Airport on Saturday afternoon. Flight 803 experienced a power loss in one of its engines, leading to a brush fire igniting near the runway. Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished, and the aircraft safely returned to Dulles, landing around 1:30 p.m.
Emily McGee, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, confirmed that the flight was met by airport fire responders upon its return. Despite the frightening situation, all 275 passengers and 15 crew members onboard were reported safe, with no injuries sustained.
The Boeing 777, which was destined for Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, has been a regular on this route. Witness accounts and FlightAware data corroborated the flight’s history between the two cities. A resident in Dale City, Virginia, approximately 39 miles from the airport, captured footage of the plane releasing fuel before the emergency landing.
Audio recordings from live air traffic control communications reveal the coordination between controllers and the flight crew as they managed the emergency. Discussions included the crew’s emergency fuel dumping procedures and preparations for the aircraft’s return to Dulles, prompting alerts for ground crews.
In response to the incident, United Airlines took immediate measures, temporarily closing a United Club lounge at Dulles Airport to facilitate passenger assistance. A spokesperson also stated that plans were underway to schedule another aircraft to continue the flight later in the day.
