Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude, is gaining significant traction in the competitive landscape of AI applications, following heightened attention surrounding the company’s complex negotiations with the Pentagon. As reported by CNBC, Claude climbed to the second spot among free apps in Apple’s US App Store over the weekend, trailing only behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Google’s Gemini holds the third position in the rankings.
Data from SensorTower indicates a remarkable ascent for Claude, which was lingering just outside the top 100 apps in January. Throughout February, it maintained a presence within the top 20 apps, steadily improving its ranking from sixth place on Wednesday to fourth on Thursday, and finally securing the second position by Saturday.
The company’s rise coincided with a backdrop of controversy related to its negotiations with the Department of Defense. Anthropic sought to establish safeguards to prevent the utilization of its AI models in mass domestic surveillance or the development of fully autonomous weapons. However, these efforts met with resistance; following these discussions, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to cease using Anthropic products, with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth designating the company as a supply-chain threat.
In contrast, OpenAI has solidified its collaboration with the Pentagon, with CEO Sam Altman asserting that their agreement includes protections aimed at preventing domestic surveillance and the use of autonomous weapons. This juxtaposition highlights the ongoing tension within the AI sector regarding ethical considerations, regulatory policies, and the interests of government entities. As Claude continues to rise in popularity, the ramifications of these negotiations may further influence the landscape of AI technology and its applications.
