A wolf that escaped from its enclosure at a South Korean zoo has captivated the public while evading capture for three days. The exotic animal, identified as Neukgu, is a two-year-old male wolf weighing approximately 35 kilograms (77 lbs). The incident began early Wednesday morning when the wolf reportedly burrowed underneath a fence to make its escape from the O-World zoo in Daejeon.
In response to the escape, local authorities took proactive measures. A nearby elementary school was closed as a safety precaution, while a significant search operation commenced, involving over 100 personnel, including firefighters, police officers, and military members. Drones fitted with thermal imaging cameras were also deployed to assist in locating the wandering wolf.
The matter has drawn attention from government officials as well. President Lee Jae Myung expressed his concerns through social media, urging the authorities to ensure the safety of both the public and Neukgu. His message garnered significant traction, being reshared more than 1,400 times on the platform X. “I hope no human casualties occur, and I pray that Neukgu also returns home safely,” he wrote on Thursday.
The incident has ignited a wave of public interest and engagement, with various online communities rallying around Neukgu. A decentralized cryptocurrency meme coin named after the wolf has surfaced, and trading of “Neukgu” reached approximately $140,000 within 24 hours. Additionally, an English-language community dedicated to the wolf on X has attracted nearly 500 followers.
Neukgu was born in 2024 and is part of a conservation effort aimed at reviving the Korean wolf, a species that has been classified as extinct in the wild. This escape is not the first of its kind in South Korea; there have been notable instances in recent years, including a zebra that roamed the streets of Seoul for several hours before being recaptured in 2023. The public’s reaction to Neukgu’s daring escape underscores both a fascination with wildlife and a deep-seated desire for the safety and well-being of both animals and people.
