The University of Texas at Austin (UT) has made history with the announcement that Michael and Susan Dell have become the institution’s first-ever billion-dollar supporters. Their significant philanthropic contribution is set to foster advancements in human health and will lead to the establishment of the UT Dell Campus for Advanced Research and the UT Dell Medical Center.
This landmark funding aims to enhance various aspects of the university, including undergraduate scholarships, student housing, and the Texas Advanced Computing Center, one of the country’s prominent supercomputing research facilities. With the Dells’ support, UT is positioning itself to become a leader in life sciences innovation while solidifying Austin’s reputation as a hub for world-class healthcare.
The UT Dell Campus for Advanced Research will integrate the university’s research capabilities, advanced computing technology, and clinical care within a single environment. At the core of this initiative is the UT Dell Medical Center, which is slated to open in 2030. This center aims to utilize AI and advanced computing for a patient-centered care model that encompasses prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research. Through this integration, the goal is to enable early detection of diseases, offer precise and personalized treatment, and ultimately improve health outcomes.
The Dells’ historic investment not only marks a substantial philanthropic commitment but also aims to propel the university toward a target of raising $10 billion in the coming decade. The intent is for UT to rank among the top 10 medical centers in the nation within that timeframe.
Michael and Susan Dell reflected on their connection to UT, stating, “What makes this moment so meaningful is the opportunity to build something that brings every part of the journey together — from how students learn, to how discoveries are made, to how care reaches families.” Their vision emphasizes the integration of medicine, science, and computing in a way that directly benefits communities across Texas and beyond.
A pivotal element of the project includes a collaboration with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, which will infuse its expertise into the UT Dell Medical Center to create a unified patient care experience. This collaboration promises to provide patients with access to advanced cancer treatments and research from the outset of their care journey.
The investment is also poised to drive long-term economic growth by reinforcing Texas’s position as a leading center for life sciences. Governor Greg Abbott noted the significance of this initiative, highlighting how it brings together two reputable institutions to foster groundbreaking medical advancements.
The Dells’ commitment follows years of significant contributions to UT, including scholarships, capital investments, and the establishment of the Dell Medical School. These efforts have not only enriched student opportunities and research capabilities but have also played a crucial role in enhancing Texas’s reputation in technological and health innovation.
UT System Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife emphasized the transformative nature of the Dells’ investment, stating that they have fundamentally altered the landscape of the university and Central Texas, establishing it as a global hub for discovery and health innovation.
UT Austin President Jim Davis characterized this moment as a “bold step forward,” thanks to the Dells’ visionary commitment and the support from state leadership. The UT Dell Campus for Advanced Research and the UT Dell Medical Center are expected to become landmarks where care, discovery, and innovation intersect.
The architectural design of the new medical center will be led by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), a firm recognized internationally for its design and engineering innovations. The groundbreaking for the UT Dell Medical Center is slated for later this year, signaling the beginning of an ambitious future for healthcare and research at the University of Texas at Austin.
