In a recent wave of layoffs, Google has joined the ranks of several major tech companies scaling back their workforce. Reports indicate that employees at Google Cloud have seen job cuts over the last two weeks, with the latest reductions impacting the Threat Intelligence Group, a key division responsible for security research and hacker analysis.
Sources familiar with the situation disclosed that the layoffs were not isolated to the Threat Intelligence Group; additional teams at Mandiant, a cybersecurity firm acquired by Google in 2022, as well as various divisions within Google Cloud, have also been affected. Some employees have taken to LinkedIn to express their experiences and share news of their unexpected job loss.
While Google has not disclosed the exact number of employees laid off, the company has offered justification for these cuts, suggesting a need to redirect resources into areas poised for growth, particularly artificial intelligence. A spokesperson for Google remarked that the company routinely assesses its internal structures to remain aligned with the shifting demands of its customers and the broader market.
These layoffs come amid a broader trend in the tech industry, where major players are making similar cuts as they pivot their focus toward AI investments. For instance, Meta recently laid off 10% of its workforce, while other firms like Coinbase and Block have used the transition toward artificial intelligence as a rationale for significant reductions. Cybersecurity firms are also feeling the impact, as evidenced by Cloudflare’s decision to lay off over 1,100 employees in its preparations for a future dominated by “agentic AI.”
In the previous year, Google Cloud had discretely reduced its staff count, primarily in user experience roles, though those layoffs garnered less attention. As the industry evolves, it remains to be seen how these workforce adjustments will shape the future of Google Cloud and its associated security initiatives.
