In a remarkable turn of events, a Bitcoin holder has successfully recovered their long-lost wallet after more than a decade of trying to regain access. The user, known on X as cprkrn, had been unable to access 5 BTC—valued at nearly $400,000—since changing the wallet’s password while under the influence of cannabis and subsequently forgetting it.
The arduous journey of recovery began when cprkrn stumbled upon a mnemonic phrase that turned out to be their original password. This breakthrough led to a desperate attempt to recover the wallet using Claude, an AI model. By inputting extensive files from their college computer into Claude, the user was able to unearth an old backup wallet file from December 2019 that had lain hidden within their data. Not only did Claude successfully decrypt the backup, but it also identified a bug that had stymied recovery attempts with the open-source wallet recovery tool, btcrecover.
Prior to using Claude, cprkrn had been working with various candidate passwords without success. The intricate nature of early cryptocurrency wallets compounded their difficulties; they combined mnemonic seed phrases and non-HD keys, requiring passwords for certain wallet files. Unfortunately, the password chosen during a stoned state had slipped from the user’s memory, rendering the wallet’s contents completely inaccessible.
cprkrn’s latest efforts involved diving into the depths of their digital files in hopes of finding a solution. After recovering the mnemonic seed phrase from an old college notebook—which matched the encrypted wallet file in question—the user sought new ways to unlock the digital treasure. Upon successful collaboration with Claude, the key combination for their Bitcoin wallet was finally discovered, allowing for the transfer of the previously “lost” 5 BTC.
The recovery marks a significant milestone for this individual, especially given the escalating value of Bitcoin over the years. In contrast, other stories in the crypto recovery world have not ended so positively; for instance, a user lost a staggering $780 million in Bitcoin after a court ruling prohibited him from searching a local dump for a discarded laptop containing 8,000 BTC. These contrasting fates highlight both the triumphs and tribulations faced by crypto enthusiasts in efforts to reclaim their digital fortunes.
With the help of AI’s advancements like Claude, individuals who have previously lost access to Bitcoin due to forgotten passwords or other complications may find new hope in recovering their digital assets, potentially changing their financial situations for the better.
