BlackRock Names iShares Bitcoin Trust as Top Investment Theme for 2025 Amid Bitcoin Decline

BlackRock recently identified its iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) exchange-traded fund (ETF) as one of the top three investment themes anticipated for 2025, despite a notable downturn in the cryptocurrency market this year. Bitcoin’s value has seen a significant drop, falling to approximately $89,598.70, contributing to a decline of more than 4% year-to-date—the first such decrease in three years. IBIT’s performance has been reflective of this trend, mirroring Bitcoin’s downturn.

Despite these challenges, IBIT has attracted considerable attention from investors, ranking sixth among all ETFs for 2025 inflows, with over $25 billion in capital drawn since the beginning of the year. This level of interest is noteworthy, especially as BlackRock placed IBIT in the same category as more traditional ETFs, such as the iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF (SGOV) and the iShares Top 20 U.S. Stocks ETF (TOPT).

Nate Geraci, president of the ETF Store, commented on BlackRock’s decision, suggesting that the firm is committing to its belief in Bitcoin’s role within diversified investment portfolios. He noted that while there are other BlackRock ETFs, such as the gold-focused IAU, that are performing better and charge higher fees, the choice to spotlight IBIT is unusual for an industry known for promoting its most successful products.

“If the objective were purely revenue generation, BlackRock has no shortage of ETFs with significantly higher fees that it could emphasize instead,” Geraci stated. “Asset managers aren’t typically in the business of spotlighting underperforming products, especially when they have a deep bench of outperforming alternatives.”

The designation of IBIT as a key investment theme for 2025 underscores BlackRock’s long-term confidence in cryptocurrency as a viable asset. This approach could potentially alter perceptions of Bitcoin among investors who may still regard cryptocurrency as speculative or fringe. By positioning Bitcoin alongside established investments like cash and stocks, BlackRock appears to be advocating for a broader acceptance of cryptocurrency in traditional financial portfolios.
