Chaos unfolded across Swatch stores from New York to London during the eagerly awaited launch of the new Royal Pop Collection, a collaboration with luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet. The limited-time event, taking place on Saturday, saw enthusiastic crowds lining up to purchase the wristwatches, priced between $400 and $420. However, safety concerns due to overwhelming demand prompted several locations to close their doors.

In Times Square, New York, throngs of avid watch collectors gathered outside the Swatch store. In an effort to manage the chaos, Swatch took to social media to address the situation. The company urged customers to avoid rushing to stores in large groups and reassured them that the Royal Pop Collection would remain available for several months. The message also stated that locations could not accommodate queues exceeding 50 people, with sales potentially needing to be paused as a precaution.

The situation escalated further in France, where security officials were stationed outside a Swatch store in Le Chesnay. Meanwhile, in Cannes, another gathering formed outside a different retail location as the demand continued to skyrocket.

Swatch U.S. reported an “extraordinarily high demand” for the collection, resulting in at least 19 store closures on Saturday. These included prominent locations such as the SoHo store in New York, the Houston Galleria, Lenox Square mall in Atlanta, and the King of Prussia mall in Pennsylvania. The company clarified that the collection was not a limited edition, albeit the supply challenges created significant confusion among eager buyers.

As videos emerged on social media, the extent of the frenzy became more apparent. Footage from Westfield London depicted a sizable crowd waiting outside a Swatch store, while a loudspeaker announcement informed them that the store would remain closed for the entire day. In Atlanta, police found themselves managing a long line of customers at Lenox Square mall, where officers informed the crowd that no watches were available. “They’ll release some more,” one officer assured, adding that this was not a limited release.

In Oakbrook Center mall near Chicago, a video captured the moment police intervened to help employees exit the store, which had not received its shipment of the highly anticipated collaboration. A handwritten notice posted on the storefront confirmed the location’s closure for the day, further amplifying the frustration among watch enthusiasts.

The chaotic scenes across multiple cities highlighted the immense popularity of the Royal Pop Collection and raised questions about the management of product releases moving forward. As crowds continue to seek out the coveted timepieces, Swatch is being urged to implement better crowd control measures for future launches.
