In a significant move for the cryptocurrency industry, Kris Marszalek, the CEO of Crypto.com, announced on Thursday the laying off of approximately 12% of the company’s workforce. In a post shared on X, Marszalek attributed the decision primarily to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the company’s operations.

Marszalek emphasized that Crypto.com is taking decisive steps to adapt to a rapidly evolving technological landscape. He warned that companies failing to embrace AI would struggle to survive, stating, “Companies that do not make this pivot immediately will fail. Companies that move slowly will be left behind.” This declaration not only highlights the urgency with which businesses must adapt but also reflects an industry-wide trend where AI is increasingly becoming a key player in operational strategies.

The layoffs will reportedly target roles that are deemed incompatible with the company’s new direction, focusing specifically on positions that do not integrate well into the evolving AI framework. This move to cut jobs follows a notable pattern, as other leaders in the tech sector, such as Block’s CEO Jack Dorsey, have also pointed to a shift towards AI as a reason for substantial workforce reductions.

Critics, however, have begun to question whether these layoffs truly stem from AI integration or if they serve as an excuse for broader business struggles. Some industry analysts suggest that executives might be using the rise of AI as a pretext to make cuts unrelated to technological advancement.

Marszalek’s commitment to the significance of AI is further underscored by his April acquisition of the domain name AI.com for a record $70 million, signaling a strong belief in the transformative power of artificial intelligence within the business landscape. This context of rapid technological change comes amidst a challenging market environment, with the value of Crypto.com’s native cryptocurrency, Cronos (CRO), plummeting. After a brief resurgence in late August, CRO’s value has since declined by about 70%, reflecting a wider trend of declining cryptocurrency prices, including well-known tokens like Bitcoin and Ether.

This latest round of layoffs is not unprecedented for Crypto.com. The company had already experienced workforce reductions in June 2022 when it let go of roughly 260 employees, representing around 5% of its workforce, to streamline its focus on profitability. A further reduction occurred in January 2023, when about 20% of employees were laid off due to the repercussions of the FTX exchange collapse.

In response to inquiries, a spokesperson for Crypto.com confirmed the layoffs and the company’s focus on integrating AI across its operations. They noted that all affected employees have been informed and provided with resources to assist in their transition.

As the situation develops, many are watching closely to see how these changes will impact Crypto.com and the cryptocurrency market as a whole.
