Ferrari has unveiled a first look at its groundbreaking electric vehicle, the Luce, designed in collaboration with the renowned design house LoveFrom, founded by Jony Ive. This marks a significant shift for Ferrari, which had previously indicated it would never venture into the EV market. The Luce represents a bold departure from traditional Ferrari aesthetics, and its design is certain to evoke a strong range of reactions from automotive enthusiasts.

The Luce’s exterior, characterized by its unconventional form, pushes boundaries far beyond what fans of the brand might expect. Sporting an SUV-like silhouette, the Luce features four doors and comfortably seats five, marking a historic moment for Ferrari as it ventures into the realm of multi-passenger vehicles. Although the Purosangue SUV was Ferrari’s first foray into four-door design, the Luce further expands the brand’s versatility. Stylish suicide doors provide unique access to the rear seats, enhancing the vehicle’s luxury appeal, and a convenient button allows for automatic closure, adding a touch of modernity to its design.

Inside, the Luce’s interior showcases a radical shift from Ferrari’s typical offerings. While initial impressions suggested a space that could feel cold or overly clinical, the final product, with its warm leather accents, offers a more welcoming environment. However, feedback regarding headroom in the back seat may raise some concerns for taller passengers. The second row offers tech controls inspired by the dashboard’s design, though the software is still in pre-production and not yet fully functional.

Despite the shifting design ethos, Ferrari’s commitment to performance remains steadfast. Under the hood, the Luce packs an impressive 1,035 horsepower generated by four independent motors—one for each wheel. This design allows for dynamic handling capabilities and enhances cornering performance. The vehicle also features four-wheel steering and an adaptive suspension system designed to automatically adjust both ride height and stiffness, optimizing performance for various driving conditions. The Luce is capable of reaching a top speed of 193 mph, and with its advanced traction control systems, it aims to set new benchmarks in driving dynamics.

Powering the Luce is a low-mounted 122-kWh battery pack that supports rapid charging at 350 kW, providing an estimated range of 329 miles according to European testing standards. Prospective drivers can expect a somewhat lower range under stricter U.S. tests. This effective balance between power and efficiency signals Ferrari’s innovation in the EV space, combining high performance with practical considerations for luxury owners.

An intriguing feature of the Luce is its approach to sound design. While EVs are often known for their near-silence, Ferrari has cleverly integrated an acoustic pickup on the rear axle that allows the car to generate a unique auditory experience by sampling motor vibrations. This innovative solution adds a layer of character and nostalgia, resonating with the brand’s storied performance heritage while embracing modern electrification.

As Ferrari positions the Luce not just as an addition to its lineup but as a pivotal redefinition of its brand identity, the feedback from traditional enthusiasts remains to be seen. Early indications suggest that the pricing will reflect its high-end design, with an anticipated starting price in Italy of €550,000, making it Ferrari’s most expensive model to date— a substantial leap from the already premium-priced Purosangue.

As the automotive world eagerly awaits a driving experience of the Luce, it remains to be seen whether this audacious model will successfully capture the essence of Ferrari while attracting a new generation of drivers.
