Welcome to this week’s edition of our institutional newsletter, featuring insights and analyses critical for navigating the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency.

This week’s highlights cover the impact of the GENIUS Act on Bitcoin’s monetary appeal, innovative staking strategies for Ethereum, and important developments that institutions should be aware of.

Ravi Tanuku, managing member and general partner at Natural Capital, delves into how the recently enacted GENIUS Act has shifted the dynamics surrounding Bitcoin. Since July 18, 2025, gold has outperformed Bitcoin significantly—nearly doubling in value under what many consider similar macroeconomic conditions. Tanuku posits that Bitcoin’s decline stemmed not from typical market cycles or risks, but rather from the U.S. government’s introduction of a regulated stablecoin framework that effectively undercut Bitcoin’s monetary utility. By mandating stablecoins backed by U.S. dollars and Treasuries, the GENIUS Act has created a government-sanctioned alternative to Bitcoin, resulting in diminished demand for the cryptocurrency.

The framing of Bitcoin’s utility has generally focused on its use cases as digital gold and a speculative asset. However, adoption data suggests that Bitcoin has primarily functioned as a dollar substitute in markets with capital controls and currency depreciation, particularly in emerging economies like Nigeria, Vietnam, and Argentina. Tanuku’s analysis reveals that Bitcoin’s allure largely derived from these dollar access characteristics. Post-GENIUS, the capitalization of stablecoins surged, increasing 45% within months, while Bitcoin’s value dropped by 43%—indicating a fundamental shift in market preference.

Turning to Ethereum, Jesper Johansen, CEO and founder of Northstake, presents a novel approach to ETH staking that minimizes exposure to lending markets. Traditionally, leveraged staking involves depositing ETH to earn liquid staking tokens while borrowing against them—a method fraught with liquidation risks and volatility. Johansen proposes a strategy that circumvents these risks by using Lido’s native vault structure to create yield without engaging in lending protocols. This method allows for returns approaching 6.6% APY by efficiently utilizing rate differentials inherent in staking, thus providing a stable yield option without the pitfalls of conventional staking strategies.

In the headlines, significant institutional developments emerged this week. The SEC is reportedly moving towards establishing a framework for tokenized stocks, enabling third-party entities to issue tokenized public equities for decentralized finance (DeFi) trading sans issuer approval. Following this, Nasdaq received conditional approval to list cash-settled Bitcoin index options, a landmark decision set to bolster institutional trading in the crypto space.

In related news, Prometheum, an SEC-registered firm, has launched initiatives for broker-dealer distribution, facilitating the trading of tokenized securities and crypto assets via traditional brokerage accounts. Meanwhile, Hyperliquid is making strides in prediction markets, engaging in pre-IPO trading that reflects a growing interest in innovative financial instruments.

Data visualization this week highlights NEAR’s Intents fee run-rate, which held steady at approximately $36 million annually, even as NEAR’s price fluctuated dramatically over the past months. The overall resilience of this fee run-rate amidst market volatility underscores the potential for sustainable revenue in blockchain projects.

As the crypto landscape continues to evolve with regulatory developments and innovative financial strategies, institutions are advised to monitor these trends closely. The shifting dynamics surrounding Bitcoin and Ethereum staking strategies exemplify the broader transformations underway in the financial ecosystem.
