Ice and Fog Lead to Multiple Accidents on Lowcountry Bridges, Closing Lanes

Messy conditions on the bridges in the Lowcountry have continued to create significant traffic disruptions Wednesday morning, as multiple accidents have been reported, leading to lane closures. Both the Don Holt Bridge and the Cosgrove Bridge are currently closed in both directions due to these incidents, with reports indicating that several injuries have resulted from the collisions.

The tumultuous situation began early Wednesday between 4:35 a.m. and 5:10 a.m., with dispatch records documenting three separate crashes occurring in quick succession between Virginia Avenue and Clements Ferry Road. These initial incidents marked the beginning of a challenging morning for commuters, as additional crashes compounded the difficulties on the bridges as the day progressed.

Traffic was already heavily congested on the Don Holt Bridge by 5 a.m., with conditions deteriorating further as multiple eastbound lanes were closed due to the accidents. Early-morning commuters observed a backlog that extended significantly, leading to frustrating delays for those attempting to navigate the area.

First Alert Meteorologist Joey Sovine noted that moisture on the bridge surfaces was likely freezing, exacerbating the hazardous conditions. North Charleston Police attributed the accidents to icy patches combined with dense fog, which had settled over the region.

Officials are advising drivers to consider alternative routes, such as the Ravenel Bridge, for those needing access to Daniel Island and Mount Pleasant. They are urging motorists to remain cautious, avoid affected areas when possible, and to drive at a reduced speed, given the potential for icy conditions.

As the situation evolves, local authorities continue to monitor road conditions and assess the ongoing impact of these accidents on traffic flow throughout the Lowcountry.
