The tumultuous situation began early Wednesday between 4:35 a.m. and 5:10 a.m., with dispatch records documenting three separate crashes occurring in quick succession between Virginia Avenue and Clements Ferry Road. These initial incidents marked the beginning of a challenging morning for commuters, as additional crashes compounded the difficulties on the bridges as the day progressed.
Traffic was already heavily congested on the Don Holt Bridge by 5 a.m., with conditions deteriorating further as multiple eastbound lanes were closed due to the accidents. First Alert Meteorologist Joey Sovine noted that moisture on the bridge surfaces was likely freezing, exacerbating the hazardous conditions. North Charleston Police attributed the accidents to icy patches combined with dense fog, which had settled over the region.
Officials are advising drivers to consider alternative routes, such as the Ravenel Bridge, for those needing access to Daniel Island and Mount Pleasant.
