Plans to establish a second US Sphere venue have been unveiled for National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Maryland. This location, positioned along the scenic Potomac River, is already home to a convention center, hotels, restaurants, and various shopping options, making it a vibrant destination.
Unlike the massive Sphere in Las Vegas, which holds over 17,000 seats, the National Harbor Sphere is designed as a mini-version with a capacity of 6,000 seats. Although smaller, the venue will feature a striking exterior equipped with an LED exosphere, aimed at displaying both artistic visuals and branded content that have become a defining element of the Las Vegas Sphere.
Inside, audiences can expect an immersive experience with a high-resolution wrap-around screen measuring 16,000 by 16,000 pixels. The venue will also include cutting-edge sound technology, haptic seating, and innovative “4D environmental effects.” Events at this new venue will likely mirror the AI-enhanced version of The Wizard of Oz currently showcased in Las Vegas, where attendees enjoy multi-sensory effects such as wind, fog, and even aromas, alongside falling apples from the ceiling.
The financial aspect of the project is also noteworthy. It is expected to be less expensive to construct than its Las Vegas counterpart, which had a price tag of $2.3 billion. However, the realization of the mini-Sphere is dependent on obtaining specific governmental incentives and approvals from both Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland. Sphere Entertainment has indicated that the project will leverage a mix of public and private funding, which is projected to include around $200 million in state and local incentives.
Moreover, the mini-Sphere is anticipated to significantly boost the local economy, potentially generating millions in revenue for both the county and the state. It is also expected to create over 4,700 jobs once operational, underscoring the economic impact this entertainment venue could have in the region.
