The Mobile World Congress featured the Meta corporate logo prominently at its Fira Gran Via booth, showcasing the company’s commitment to an “AI-First” hardware ecosystem. This presentation comes amid a notable period for the stock market, particularly for the S&P 500, which has reached record highs. However, the so-called “Magnificent 7,” a group of heavyweight stocks including Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, has notably lagged behind the broader market.
As options traders anticipate a shift, they are placing bets on the performance of these major tech companies, particularly as many are set to report earnings this week. The performance of these stocks will significantly influence the potential for further gains in the S&P 500, which has risen by 2.4% year-to-date. In contrast, the Magnificent 7 has remained largely stagnant.
In the realm of trading, call options are being priced higher than puts for the five companies reporting earnings—indicating bullish sentiment among traders. Notably, all but Alphabet are seeing a higher volume of call options. For Alphabet, however, there’s an unusual expectation of volatility, with options suggesting a potential stock fluctuation of around 5.25%. This stands in stark contrast to its historical average of 1% over the last four quarters, suggesting that traders might be paying a premium for this perceived risk.
Meta, on the other hand, offers a more enticing prospect for options traders. The implied movement for Meta’s stock is pegged at 7%, yet the company has averaged a 9% move during earnings reports over the previous year. This discrepancy points to a potential opportunity for heightened returns.
As volatility in tech stocks increases and options prices rise, especially with the Cboe Volatility Index remaining stable in the mid-18s, traders are advised to remain cautious with their investments. Historically, volatility tends to decrease after earnings announcements, meaning traders should consider their cost strategies carefully as they navigate this unpredictable landscape.
