A surge in third-quarter earnings has driven the stock market to new record highs, instilling optimism among investors as they anticipate a series of corporate reports and a Federal Reserve meeting this week. Despite a government shutdown that has left a gap in economic data, the S&P 500 achieved its first record close since October 8, buoyed by expectations of robust corporate earnings and ongoing dialogues regarding economic policy.

As corporate reports flood in, attention will pivot toward negotiations over the ongoing government shutdown, although earnings results are expected to dominate discussions on Wall Street. Approximately one-third of the portfolio managed by the Club will see active participation in reporting, intensifying the focus on these companies. Furthermore, President Donald Trump’s high-stakes diplomatic trip in Asia, particularly his anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, adds an unpredictable element to the economic landscape.

Several key companies are in the spotlight this week, with earnings expectations set as follows:

  1. Corning: Set to kick off the reporting week on Tuesday, Corning’s performance in the optical communications sector will be pivotal, especially as demand ties into the burgeoning AI data center market. Forecasts suggest earnings of 66 cents per share on revenue of $4.23 billion.

  2. Boeing: Reporting Wednesday, Boeing’s delivery rates for its 787 and 737 Max aircraft will be scrutinized, while analysts anticipate a significant $4 billion charge associated with the troubled 777x program. A consensus forecast predicts a loss of $5.15 per share on revenue of $21.97 billion.

  3. Starbucks: The coffee chain’s turnaround efforts will be closely examined when it reports earnings. Analysts expect results to reflect a slight improvement, targeting earnings of 57 cents per share on sales of $9.36 billion.

  4. Meta Platforms: Anticipated strong user engagement will be coupled with scrutiny over cost management as Meta reports on Wednesday night. The consensus estimate stands at $6.68 earnings per share on revenue of $49.37 billion.

  5. Microsoft: Expectations center on Azure’s growth, particularly as it relates to AI investments. Forecasts predict earnings of $3.67 per share on revenue of $75.33 billion.

  6. Eli Lilly: The company’s position in the GLP-1 market will be critical, particularly regarding recent coverage exclusions. Analysts project earnings of $5.86 per share on revenue of $16.04 billion.

  7. Bristol Myers: Investors will focus on drug sales trends and upcoming trial results, forecasting earnings of $1.54 per share on revenue of $11.82 billion.

  8. Amazon: AWS performance will be under close watch following previous slower growth rates, with earnings expected to be $1.58 per share on revenue of $177.72 billion.

  9. Apple: Demand for the iPhone 17 will be of utmost importance, alongside assessments of services revenue growth. Analysts expect earnings of $1.77 per share on revenue of $102.12 billion.

  10. Linde: While often overshadowed, Linde’s role as a supplier of industrial gases is crucial for understanding broader market dynamics. A consensus of $4.18 earnings per share on $8.61 billion in revenue points to its significance.

In addition to earnings, the Federal Reserve is slated to hold a meeting on Wednesday, where a quarter-point rate cut is anticipated. This adjustment would push the overnight lending rate to a range of 3.75% to 4%. Market responses to this decision will be keenly observed, especially given the uncertain bond market reactions evident from previous Fed actions.

Amid these developments, Trump’s diplomatic itinerary, which includes meetings in Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea, promises to address U.S.-China trade relations. Investors are eager for updates on issues such as rare earth minerals and the flow of semiconductors.

As the week continues, market participants will remain vigilant not only on corporate earnings but also on economic signals from the Fed and the geopolitical landscape, with the hope of maintaining the market’s positive momentum.
