Oilers Acquire Tristan Jarry from Penguins to Resolve Goaltending Issues

In a significant move to remedy their ongoing goaltending woes, the Edmonton Oilers have officially acquired Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins in a trade finalized on Friday. The deal saw the Oilers parting ways with goalie Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak, and a second-round pick for 2029, in exchange for Jarry and forward Sam Poulin.

Jarry, who is currently in his 10th season in the NHL, has spent his entire career thus far with the Penguins. His performance this season has been noteworthy, demonstrating his capability to elevate Pittsburgh’s status in the playoff race. As of Thursday’s games, he boasted an impressive record of 9 wins, 3 losses, and 1 overtime loss, along with a .909 save percentage and a 2.66 goals-against average. He has also recorded one shutout, and analytics platform MoneyPuck has credited him with 9.8 goals saved above expected—a testament to his ability to make crucial stops.

The Oilers’ struggles in goal have been well documented, with the team currently holding the second-worst save percentage in the NHL at .873. After making consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals, only to fall short against the Florida Panthers in both instances, the need for a reliable goaltender has become more pressing than ever. Both Skinner and backup Calvin Pickard have faced challenges in providing the stability needed for a championship run.

While the Oilers initially sought to pair a veteran goalie with Skinner, managing this strategy under salary cap constraints proved difficult. In securing Jarry, who is under contract through the 2027-28 season at a cap hit of $5.375 million, the Oilers believe they have added the necessary experience and skill to their goaltending unit.

In addition to the Jarry trade, Edmonton also made headlines by acquiring defenseman Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators for a third-round pick in the 2027 draft, further bolstering their roster.

As the Oilers look to regroup and improve upon their recent playoff performances, the addition of Jarry and Stastney marks a new chapter in their quest for success on the ice.
