A new Bitcoin mining facility is taking shape in Amory, with city officials optimistic about its potential impact on the local economy. Utilities Manager Mike King emphasized the project’s aim to “offset the load on utilities” following the departure of several businesses in the area.
Situated on an industrial site along Waterway Drive, the facility will feature several shipping containers outfitted with mining equipment. Bitcoin, a form of digital currency, relies on these mining operations to validate transactions and maintain the overall network.
Local residents have expressed hope that the facility may stimulate economic growth. Stephanie Whitfield, a Monroe Case Manager, shared her aspirations: “I hope and I pray to God that this right here will stabilize the utility cost, and our community can start moving forward in the right direction as far as helping them save money.”
While the project is not a large-scale data center, a software engineer highlighted that such facilities could support diverse online services, including social media, gaming, and artificial intelligence. However, the Amory site is specifically designed as a Bitcoin mining operation.
Currently, city leaders indicate that everything is progressing according to schedule, with an anticipated completion date set for August. The community is closely watching the development, hopeful that it will bring new jobs and investment to the region.
