Air New Zealand is set to transform long-haul travel for economy passengers with the introduction of a unique sleeping solution aboard its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline plans to roll out the Skynest sleep pods, featuring triple-tier bunk beds, allowing travelers to book four-hour segments of sleep during long flights, particularly those stretching 16 to 18 hours on the Auckland to New York route.
Starting in November, the airline will open bookings for these innovative sleep pods, aimed at providing a comfortable resting option for economy and premium economy travelers. The initial cost for a four-hour respite will be 495 New Zealand dollars (approximately $291), in addition to the price of an economy ticket. Each pod is designed to accommodate solo travelers, offering curtained privacy but prohibiting snacking and the presence of children or additional companions.
The six sleep pods, arranged in a stacked configuration, promise a cozy experience, but passengers will need to adhere to specific etiquette rules. Air New Zealand’s guidelines stress the importance of cleanliness and respect for fellow travelers, including restrictions on personal fragrances and the requirement to switch to specially provided socks before entering the pod. For hygiene, pillows, blankets, and sheets will be refreshed between uses.
Accessing the pods involves limited headroom, necessitating bending, crawling, or climbing, with the dimensions measuring 80 inches (203 cm) in length and varying widths from 25 inches (64 cm) to 16 inches (41 cm). While lie-flat beds are not a new concept for business and first-class travelers, Air New Zealand claims this offering marks the first time such accommodations will be available for economy passengers.
The Skynest initiative is part of the airline’s efforts to enhance the in-flight experience, especially as airlines continue to look for ways to monetize economy seating through add-ons and upgrades. Air New Zealand first announced plans for the sleep pods back in 2020 as part of its strategy to improve customer satisfaction amidst challenges such as rising fuel costs—recently exacerbated by geopolitical events.
Despite facing volatility and uncertainty in its operating environment, the introduction of the Skynest pods is a step towards addressing the common concern of fatigue on lengthy flights. The airline acknowledges the reality of passenger experiences, humorously noting the inevitability of snoring during these communal rest periods and providing earplugs to assist those seeking a quieter environment.
As travelers await the launch of this groundbreaking service, Air New Zealand holds the promise of facilitating more restful journeys across some of the world’s longest routes.
