Chris Larsen, co-founder of Ripple and a self-proclaimed privacy advocate, has surfaced on a leaked guest list tied to Dialog, a clandestine network founded by Peter Thiel, a major player in the surveillance industry. The leaked information was unveiled by investigative journalist Dave Troy, who highlighted Larsen’s dual role as both a participant and a founding fellow of Dialog, which has been likened to a high-profile gathering akin to the Bilderberg Group.
Dialog markets itself as an exclusive environment where influential leaders from diverse fields can engage in private discussions and form networks. The organization hosts annual retreats characterized by secretive sessions on topics such as “Money (Does?) Buy Happiness” and “Navigating WWIII.” While fostering dialogue, Dialog’s events maintain an air of confidentiality that aligns with the interests of those involved.
Larsen has built a public persona around advocating for privacy rights, co-founding the coalition Californians for Privacy Now and serving on the board of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. His wealth, largely tied to Ripple’s innovative XRP Ledger, is estimated by Bloomberg to exceed $12 billion. However, his association with surveillance became evident through his funding of the Real-Time Investigation Center, which operated within the same building as Ripple’s former headquarters in San Francisco.
Peter Thiel, on the other hand, is often recognized as a prominent figure in the surveillance landscape, having co-founded Palantir and invested in various monitoring technologies, including facial recognition and location tracking firms. The connection between Thiel and Larsen goes back to Thiel’s Founders Fund, which was an early investor in Ripple, indicating a long-standing financial association prior to the Dialog revelations.
The recent leak also indicated a forthcoming retreat near Dublin, which was initially scheduled for August. Internal documents suggested that Dialog has over 1,000 paying members and that attendees may be evaluated based on their financial status and fame, raising questions about the exclusivity and nature of participation in such gatherings.
Despite differing opinions on whether Dialog is a secret society or merely a convening platform, some participants have claimed to be unaware of Thiel’s presence. Troy noted that the list leaked represents participants for an upcoming meeting rather than formal members. In a 2021 interview, Ripple’s CEO Brad Garlinghouse acknowledged attending a conference hosted by Thiel and Auren Hoffman, suggesting that Dialog is not entirely obscured from public knowledge.
Larsen’s past involvement in the expansion of surveillance in San Francisco, which included a vast network of police cameras and drones, contradicts his portrayals as a privacy champion. He financed the largest private surveillance project in the city’s history, featuring around 2,700 cameras and a $9.4 million center for real-time investigations. At the time, he asserted that the police could not monitor the system live due to local laws.
As the implications of these connections come to light, the discussion surrounding privacy, surveillance, and the ethics of technological innovation continues to evolve. The evolving narrative raises critical questions about the intersection of wealth, power, and privacy in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
