Crusoe, a data center operator known for its innovative approach to energy utilization, has made a significant shift from its original focus on Bitcoin mining to a robust investment in AI infrastructure. This transition follows the recent sale of its Bitcoin mining operations, allowing the company to leverage its expertise in energy management to expand its capabilities in the AI sector.

The company is reportedly in discussions to secure $3 billion in funding, a move that could increase its valuation to an impressive $30 billion—three times its valuation of $10 billion highlighted last October. This substantial financial backing is anticipated to enhance Crusoe’s capacity for AI computing power, with the firm currently managing nearly 5 gigawatts of contracted computing power and possessing a pipeline of over 40 gigawatts.

Industry giants, including Meta Platforms Inc., Microsoft, and Google, are among the key players purchasing capacity from Crusoe. Recent contracts include data center developments in Texas and Missouri, reflecting the growing demand for AI computing resources driven by the global AI boom.

Crusoe originally launched in 2018, focusing on modular data centers deployed on oil and gas fields to harness flared natural gas for Bitcoin mining. Following the divestiture of its Bitcoin business, Crusoe has pivoted to constructing large-scale data centers designed for artificial intelligence applications. This pivot aligns with the escalating global demand for enhanced computing power, as organizations increasingly turn to AI technologies.

The reported funding will facilitate the expansion of Crusoe’s computing power infrastructure, which could potentially supply electricity sufficient for around 30 million U.S. households. Although specific details regarding the allocation of the raised funds have not been disclosed, this initiative is critical for reinforcing the company’s infrastructure capabilities in the burgeoning AI landscape. Crusoe’s previous funding round, co-led by Valor Equity Partners and Mubadala Capital, underscored the investor interest in the company’s unique energy solutions.

In recent developments, Meta executed a deal to acquire capacity at Crusoe’s data centers in Childress, Texas, and Warrenton, Missouri. However, plans to establish a data center in Wyoming were recently put on hold after Google raised concerns about project costs and timelines, highlighting the competitive and complex nature of the data center market.

As Crusoe navigates this transformative phase, the company’s commitment to adapting its business model to meet the evolving demands of the technology landscape positions it strategically for future growth amidst a backdrop of rising interest in artificial intelligence solutions.
