A recent report by Bitget highlights significant challenges faced by aspiring Web3 professionals in securing their first job, revealing that barriers to hiring are more critical than a lack of qualified candidates. The insights were released under the company’s Blockchain4Youth initiative and stem from a survey conducted among early-career individuals across various regions.
The survey results indicated that over 54% of respondents identified prior experience requirements for entry-level roles as the most substantial obstacle hindering their employment. Additionally, 52% felt that their educational programs primarily focused on theoretical knowledge, leaving them underprepared with practical skills necessary for the industry. The respondents were predominantly from emerging markets, with Nigeria, Indonesia, and China representing nearly half of the survey participants. Remarkably, around 46% of respondents were aged between 23 to 30 years, and more than 58% possessed higher education degrees, including bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral qualifications.
Gracy Chen, the chief executive of Bitget, emphasized that while the Web3 space has successfully attracted a global pool of talent, there is an urgent need to facilitate pathways to employment. The survey identified the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain as the most sought-after career trajectory among respondents, with 61% indicating interest in this area. Furthermore, 62% of participants highlighted mentorship as the most valuable form of support they sought in their career pursuits.
The Blockchain4Youth initiative has shown robust growth since its inception in early 2023, engaging over 15,000 participants and forming partnerships with more than 70 universities worldwide. The program also recently celebrated a milestone, with its Learning Hub exceeding 10,000 registered learners.
The findings of this report point to a vital need for transformation in the hiring processes within the Web3 industry, addressing the discrepancies between experienced requirements and the capabilities of a highly educated and motivated candidate pool.
